Children Can Earn a Free Book for Reading This Summer

Barnes and Noble's 2009 Children's Summer Reading Program is in full swing. Beginning on May 26 and running through September 7, 2009, young readers have an opportunity to read during their summer vacation and earn a free book with the completion of the program.
How Barnes and Noble's Summer Reading Program Works
The program is open to any child wishing to participate, specifically those in grades one through six.
- Kids are required to read eight books of their choosing throughout their summer vacation. A list of recommended titles, arranged by grade level, is provided in the Summer Reading Journal.
- Parents can help their children download the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Journal from their website. The journal is available in both English and Spanish.
- Children are required to log each book read by author and title in their Summer Reading Journal. For each book read, kids will list their favorite part of the story.
- When all eight books are read and logged, parents sign off on the Journal and return it to their local Barnes and Noble book store.
Barnes and Noble's Summer Reading Program Rewards Children with Free Book
Children who successfully read all eight books and return their signed and completed journal to their local Barnes and Noble book store will receive a coupon for a free paperback book. A list of eligible titles are printed on the free book coupon and kids can choose their favorite among the available titles.
As an added bonus, kids also have the chance to win an autographed copy of the final Percy Jackson book, The Last Olympian, by Rick Riordan. No separate entry form is needed, their journal serves as an entry ticket.
Summer Reading Program Resources for Parents
Barnes and Noble offers additional resources for parents who want to get the most out of their kids' summer reading. Four additional activities are included in the Summer Reading Journal including a section where children can list their favorite authors, illustrators and titles, helping them to discover other books they might enjoy, a way to keep track of fiction and non-fiction titles (as well as different genres) they have read over the summer, a mythology matching game to help kids learn about characters in mythology and an opportunity for young readers to create their own adventure story. Keeping school-age children interested in reading is especially important over the summer and a free book promotion is a particularly effective way to do so.
