O Magazine Picks its Top Summer ReadsA Look at Oprah and Her Staff's Best Summer Books
Oprah and her O magazine staff once again offer fans a list of the summer's best books. Memoir, mystery and romance are only some of the list's wide variety of offerings.
Summer is the perfect time to catch up on reading. While Oprah's Book Club isn't scheduled to launch its newest selection until the fall, O magazine has compiled its list of the best books for summer to hold readers over until the next official book club title is released. Here's a sneak peek at some of the titles: Must Read Nonfiction:Audition by Barbara Walters. This is the most widely recognized book on the list, and worth a read for anyone curious about how Ms. Walters got to the place where she is today. A very honest, juicy and truthful recollection of one of the world's most fascinating people. Lopsided by Meredith Nolan. Cancer is not a funny subject, however Nolan strives to take a humorous look at her own battle with breast cancer. This book takes a heavy subject and makes it approachable by mixing dead-on laughs with an insightful personal tale. Girls Like Us by Shelia Weller. A look at the lives of Carole King, Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell and the impact their careers have had on their generation. An addicting biographical mix of gossip and nostalgia that reads like a novel. Compelling Mysteries:Careless in Red by Elizabeth George. The latest in the Lynley series, this novel centers on the detective's ability to move past his wife's death and his search to find meaning in his own life. It is tinged with enough psychological thrills and character development, that a reader can get quickly carried away in the story. What Makes Mind's Eye by Hakan Nesser. While this is Nesser's first crime novel to be published in English, it's easy to see why he has achieved such success in Sweden. The first in the Inspector Van Veeteren series, this crime mystery packs a gripping plot worthy of being the perfect beach read. Addictive Fiction: The Condition by Jennifer Haigh. So much more than a typical dysfunctional family novel, this book perfectly enlivens its characters and is unflinching in its depiction of Turner syndrome and family relationships. A moving book that is over too soon. Beginner's Greek by James Collins. O magazine called this one their "Pick for Pure Pleasure" and it's easy to see why. A story about fate, life and how love can ultimately transcend all things. A must-read for anyone who enjoys their romance novels with a dash of comic relief. This collection of books are sure to help any reader beat the heat and make the most of their summer reading.
