Oprah's Reading List for Kids

ALSC Teams Up with Winfrey to Create Children's Book List

Aug 21, 2008 Lisa Rufle

Oprah WInfrey introduces a children's reading section to her website to encourage and promote reading among kids of all ages.

For many adults, Oprah Winfrey is the go-to guide for what to read. In addition to using books as a central theme in many of her show's topics, she also continues to promote the beloved Oprah's Book Club. With book clubs hanging on every one of her selections, she has firmly established herself as a source of guidance for popular adult reading material.

Riding on the success Winfrey has had in promoting reading among adults, she has teamed up with The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) in conjunction with The American Library Association (ALA) to create a suggested reading list for children, to encourage and foster an enjoyment of reading beginning at an early age.

Basics of Oprah's Kids Reading List

The set-up is simple and full of information for parents, teachers and caregivers. Based on age, Oprah provides her book selections, with each group containing a list of at least 20 titles with short summaries. Age groups are divided into five subsections:

  • Infant -2 years
  • 3-5 years
  • 6-9 years
  • 10-12 years
  • 12 & Up

In addition, there is a "Classics" section, which is also categorized by age group that according to the ALSC provides adults "the opportunity to share the books they once loved with their own children". All books that appear on the list have been selected by ALSC Quicklists Consulting Committee comprised of librarians and childhood education specialists.

Goals of Oprah's Kids Reading List

Besides promoting reading among children, Pat Scales of the ALSC hops that this initiative serves to offer literary guidance and "to connect with a wide range of people we may not have reached otherwise". With the name-recognition and notoriety that attaches itself to all things Oprah, this ambitious resource will provide every parent and/or caregiver with internet access an opportunity to give children the valuable and life-long gift of the love of reading.

Additional Offerings on Oprah's Kids Reading List

In addition to providing age-appropriate book lists, this resource also supplies visitors with "10 Ways to Make Reading Fun for Kids", consisting of ten tips that parents and those raising children can use to create a bond between kids and reading.

The tips are useful in providing ideas to get kids to turn away from the TV, computer and video games and focus on the joys available to them between the covers of a good book. Other sound advice includes encouraging kids to read whatever they naturally gravitate to (from magazines to comics) and setting a good example by displaying books and reading prominently in the household.

Parents, teachers and librarians can visit Oprah's website for a complete list of the book sugggestions, bibliographies and tips to encourage reading.
